La máquina de la fortuna or The Fortune Teller Machine is an interactive sculpture elaborated in collaboration with the Kaqchikel Maya collective Kaqjay Moloj. It is part of a collective exhibition in the town of Patzicía, Guatemala titled Life and Memory of Patzicía (Vida y memoria de Patzicía), created in collaboration with Kaqjay Moloj and with the support of the public program Guatemala Después, by Ciudad Imaginación in Guatemala and the New School in New York. The piece evokes a fortune teller machine that prints fortune messages in Kaqchikel and in Spanish. It is based on the idea that words have power and that one can will the future into being. In order to do so, the members of the Kaqjay community elaborated a list with their desires for the future. Then these collective desires were programmed into the fortune teller machine.
La máquina de la fortuna es una escultura interactiva elaborada en colaboración con el colectivo kaqchikel (maya) Kaqjay Moloj. Es parte de una exhibición colectiva en el pueblo de Patzicía, Guatemala titulada Vida y memoria de Patzicía, creada en colaboración con Kaqjay Moloj y con el apoyo del programa público Guatemala Después, de Ciudad Imaginación en Guatemala y de la New School de Nueva York. La pieza evoca una máquina para predecir el futuro que imprime mensajes de la fortuna en kaqchikel y en español. Está basada en la idea de que las palabras tienen poder y pueden hacer realidad el futuro. Para lograrlo, los miembros de la comunidad Kaqjay elaboraron una lista de sus deseos para el futuro. Luego estos deseos fueron programados en la máquina para predecir el futuro.
When the viewer presses the button, the machine prints out a small message that lists one of those desires:

The machine is made with an mechanical Australian parakeet that chirps and moves when someone approaches its movement detector. This bird evokes the birds that predict the future in the town’s fair in Patzicía. It is made also with a button switch, a thermal printer, a wooden box, and arduino technology.
La máquina está hecha con un perico australiano mecánico que canta y se mueve cuando alguien se acerca a su detector de movimiento. El pájaro evoca a los pájaros que predicen el futuro en la feria del pueblo de Patzicía. Está hecha con un botón para encenderla, una impresora termal, una caja de madera y tecnología de arduino.
